The Penelopes Reviewed by Phillippe Coullette, IV

A summer night in Paris and if I didn’t have the damnedest luck. My wife, Coverton, of whom we shall speak no more, was suffering from her migraines and so I was left without her magesterial presence yet again. The only thing to do was to jump into my beige 1967 Citroen DS and cruise the city feeling sorry for myself.

Making only a single stop to pick up Fresa and Francesca, two models new in town, I popped in the new record from the Penelopes, “Eternal Spring”. Feeeling lonely even has they attempted to amuse me by stripping down to their Cosa Bellas, I drove slowly around my city’s gorgeous avenues, smoking a Silk Cut and wallowing in the smooth retro-pop the Penelopes have perfected. A Japanese outfit fronted by Tatsuhiko Watanabe, the sounds of 60’s pop filtered through 40 years of post-modernism soothed me as I ignored the conversation I was having. Airy vocals, plinking guitars, and great if inconsequential soft-rocking melodies were the perfect background music as the girls tried to cheer me up in the way that only dewy foreign models can attempt. Finally it was time to call it a night and take the girls home.

The next day when I woke up, Fresa on one side and Francesca on the other, I felt clean, simple, and ready to cruise the streets yet again, all by myself. Or with two different models, depending on where the night would take me…
