The sky cracked with the impending fury of a New York City shitstorm as I hoofed it downtown to catch Louis XIV, an act that’s been garnering a dollop of hype and airtime of late. Certain industry insiders had even hinted that their brash blend of rock and hormones was just the thing the music world needed to pull it out of its post-White Strokes doldrums. Well, it’s not often you get to see a bunch of widely heralded Rock ‘n’ Roll saviors on stage in their prime, so I took the offer as a mandate and dragged myself out through the putrid runoff of what passes for early summer in this soul-swallowing hellhole.

I had seen Peter Murphy 10 years ago, and I was drunk. I met him afterwards and muttered the words “Whoah Peter Fucking Murphy… You’re fucking HOT!” Like he really needed to hear some sloppy drunk giving him kudos, but he was kind and gracious and took it as a compliment.
Fast forward 10 years later… Mr. Murphy is on tour, and I got the opportunity to see him perform live again. This time, I was sober and “camera-ready”.

What a day. I spent 2 hours drawing up a sweet new citroen graphic for “Citroen of the Month,” only to have Chaz reject it as “too ghey”. Drunken ass. In any case, the day was not totally ruined because I downloaded an insanely good mix from Jena Paradies. It’s called Kuntsform de Natur, and features Sender Berlin, the MFA, Heiko Laux and more. If you like dance/house music of any kind, you should download it now…

It was late at night and I was on the prowl. My Trans Am scraped the city streets as plumes of purple smoke swept through the t-top. My custom in-dash hi-fi was pumping out Black Sabbath’s Volume IV record at volumes few could withstand, and my mane undulated in the wind like a peroxide windsock.

Bloc Party will finally get their debut album out in the USA. The record, titled “Silent Alarm” is due to be released on March 22. Early reviews say it captures Bloc Party’s raw-yet-polished rock sound along with some studio flourishes that put it way ahead of the other new rock releases this year.

I needed a cooler climate. After bounding around and baking in the American Southwest for the last few years, I headed to that green, wet, gray, elusive corner known as the Pacific Northwest. The ‘79 Corona proved to have enough life to get me there, but barely. I drove the last 85 miles through the mountain passes with one windshield wiper, squeeking loud enough to pierce the sitar in my headphones. At 6 AM on January 30th, 2005, I pushed the car into a Salvation Army parking lot in south Seattle and left it forever. I taped a “Free” notice to the windshield, then headed north on foot.
