LETTERS OF THE WEEK:

Hi guys -

I love Borders. It's like my only source for music and books and just plain fun! Anyway, I'm looking for books about droids -- especially industrious droids that can help me build my house. I wouldn't mind also having one to help clean my house when it's done - I'm pretty messy!I couldn't find any books about droids, and we're living in the future now! You know what I mean? Also, please find me books about droids that don't give off any fecal gases. droidless, Shelly

Shelly,

Thanks for writing to us at Borders.com. I have researched your inquiry and listed below are the titles and descriptions of two books I thought might be of interest to you. Also pasted below is the URL address for the search I conducted into Androids and Robots. When you click on this URL, it should take you to the page which lists the book titles I pasted below, along with many others which may be of interest.

Robots, Androids, & Animatrons: Twelve Incredible Projects You Can Build
Trade Paperback, McGraw, February 1996
Author: Iovine, John
ISBN: 0070328048
Description: An arm, an insect, or a human-like figure that walks, talks, and obeys commands are just a few of the projects that can be built by following the simple instructions in this state-of-the-art guide. JohnIovine, a specialist in "fantastic electronics" shows how to create working robots and androids by combining off-the-shelf products and workshop constructed materials and devices.

Mobile Robots: Inspiration to Implementation  Hardcover, 368 Pages, AK Peters, May 1993 Author: Jones, Joseph / Flynn, Anita  ISBN: 1568810113
Description: With the publication of this new book, the authors hope to impart their youthful outlook and experience in conceptualizing and> creating robots to anyone interested in robotics. Their aim, put simply, is to teach the reader how to build a robot. However, they hope not only to expand the imagination of a generation of robotics enthusiasts but also supply them with the requisite skills and tools to implement their dreams. The recent wide availability of home computers and the drastic reduction in the cost of microelectronics has put this goal well within reach. This book now puts it under one cover. A melange of illuminating photographs, illustrations, and accessible text, Mobile Robots guides the reader through the step-by-step process of constructing two different, inexpensive, yet fully functional robots with a varying range of abilities. More importantly, though, the book is designed to be just a starting ground for later creating the robot of your dreams. The book is being used with tremendous success by educators such as those at Wellesley High School, Vassar College, and MIT, but you don't have to be a student to glean the authors' knowledge of robotics and artificial intelligence. Learning is a constant process and this book is designed to be amenable to as broad an audience as possible, from university professor to basement tinkerer. They say that we don't really grow up, that the toys just get more sophisticated. Maybe this book will prove them absolutely right! I hope this information is helpful to you. Please don't hesitate to contact us if there is anything else we can do for you.

Sincerely, Borders.com Customer Service
