Ric Befara: "Fuck music. It's all bullshit that's good one minute and tired the next.  I'm not into music right now. I'm not going to write some overinflated review of some mediocre crap or some idiot wailing about his problems. Right now I'm into something else: hard liquor. What, you think I'm a cop-out? You try writing five internationally acclaimed books, travelling the world, interviewing everyone who's anyone, and then we'll see who's passed out in the back of a crowded bar wearing nothing but a green shirt with a butterfly collar."

Pell Mitenbire: "I'm on my way to Calcutta, India. I want to study the life of Satyajit Ray. That guy could make a movie. He made it cheap which just means the humanity shines through like the glorious natural light he used to shoot his epics. Calcutta is a place of poverty and dust. And that's where he found his inspiration."

"I know I owe you guys a lot of reviews and I'm working on them. Here's a quick teaser:   I bought this pirated copy of Phantom Menace in Thailand for like two bucks, they're everywhere. This was one of those where you can see some dude get up in the middle to go the bathroom. This tall chick was sitting in the front row and you could see the top of her damn head the whole movie. It was pretty annoying. That and the laughter. There was this group of dudes that laughed at parts that nobody else laughed at. It was actually kind of funny 'cuz I think they were doing it as a joke. They were sitting down on the left. The camera was pretty stable though, I think the guy must have used a tripod. Anyway, movie wasn't that great. C+, B- stuff."

A reader writes: "Why haven't you guys reviewed 'Green Fields of Foreverland'? It's a beautiful album."

Javier Luna responds: "I'm a big fan of Belle and Sebastian but I really think it's Stuart Gordon's effortless grace on the vocals that make the band. I can't get in to Isobel Campbell's voice. I'm not sure she can even sing. But we will have a big B&S feature on the eve of Tigermilk's release, which I think has to be one of the most anticipated true cult releases in a while."

Terrance, American Buddhist: "It's nice to be back from vacation. It was a time for me to gather my forces and summon calmness.  To relax and contemplate the world, which we all know can be described with two words: unfairness and nonsense.  Mostly I hung out at these hot springs in Yosemite. A lot of people were naked there. I drank a lot beer but never got naked. A true Buddhist in touch with the inner being and peaceful serenity doesn't need to flaunt his body of front of others, and possibly make them feel bad about themselves. I ended up in Vegas, where I lost a couple hundred bucks gambling, but it was all on Phillip Coullette's credit card. Thanks Phil. Oh yeah, I got a new review for you of Peanut Butter Wolf's album, I'll send it soon.

From the BBS:   "I haven't time to make a formal comment, I am late for my appointment at
the spa for a steamjob and a blowbath." -Miguel (ed note: let's try to keep the commentary on the bulletin board a little less intellectual, a little less serious.)

ROBERT ZIMMERMAN

Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, heroes to one generation (and men with bad hair to another) are charging outlandish fees for their current tour. Tickets range between 48 - 96 dollars at some venues.  Chaz Bartok comments: "Fuckin' Bullshit."

Gary Sierra, international dancer: "The Olivia Tremor Control's first album, 'Dusk at Cubist Castle' is still their best. We all know I'm not inclined to  psychedelic pop-rock, but I really have nothing but  praise for these guys. It's mostly unaffected, melodic Beatlish pop, with an occasional physchedilic foray that goes on too long. But good music when I'm out on my deck, stretching my ass cheeks and watching the sunset."

************

Shelly Petworth: "Ricky Martin may be queer but he still makes me wet. And I'm a lesbian, so that's saying a lot."

Office worker Dwight "Jesse" James: "Got a new cell phone. It's only 30 bucks a month and you get 1200 minutes free local long distance. Plus I needed one. I'd missed so many calls from my bros when I was sitting at the front desk workin' that security job at the Hyatt."

Sources close to Dwight confirm that he hasn't received a call on the phone in the last week.
