Lou Reed, Sweet Jane, Live in 1974

As USOUNDS’ archivist it is my job to find things from our back issues and relay them to you. Well, our entire 1974 archive was destroyed in a fire of suspicious origin at our storage facility outside Paris, but I did come up with a sentence from a review of the very show this video is from. So while I can’t share the review, with the magic of youtube, I can show you a video, plus the sentence. Enjoy:

…at the exact moment it kicked in, Lou launched into “Sweet Jane” and it was as if I was transported beyond time and space, to a place where the underground sounds battle with hammers like the Norse Gods of old.

New Young Pony Club EP [Modular Interscope]

In the same spirit as Brazil’s CCS, British indie-electronic quintet New Young Pony Club is silly, irresistible fun. The clipped guitar chords, synth melodies and irresistible beats of their single “Ice Cream” demand booty shaking as much as its goofy, sexual metaphors (“drink me like a licker, come and dip your dipper”) make for the perfect, sassy sing-along. It’s no wonder the single sold out in the UK in three days and is no doubt destined for the sweaty, after-midnight throb of many nights to come. Their self-titled EP even includes the video for “Ice Cream”, in which the band’s three female members bop coyly atop a giant globe of rainbow-colored licorice (“I can make you ice cream, we can be a sweet team”), cat-sized dollops of whipped cream form a carousel around the drummer, and mounds of pink cotton candy loom behind stoic, mustachioed boys on bass and guitar.

PB&J’s “Young Folks” (featuring Victoria Bergsman ex-The Concretes) might be the catchiest song in the universe right now-you can’t really go wrong with bongos. “Young Folks” was also named one of the top 5 songs of 2006 by Pitchfork and NME. The full album is called Writer’s Block and will be released February 6th on Almost Gold Recordings. Catch Peter Bjorn and John January 29th on NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
