Moving Units Live in Los Angeles with Dead ’60s

By Hadley Tomicki

How many shows do you attend that rock the fuck out, while no one seems to be dancing but you and that mulleted guy who drank too much Budweiser? One could never point such a finger at a Moving Units’ show, where the dance-heavy beats mix with dark progressive rock to get asses pogo-ing, shaking, and moshing like it’s Olympia circa 1993 all over again.

Mellowdrone MP3

Los Angeles quartet, Mellowdrone released a stunning debut called Box on 3 Records/Red Ink. Guitarist and songwriter Johnathan Bates’ enthusiasm for the great Mark Linkous subtly infiltrates this album in a very enchanting way. The song, “Fashionably Uninvited” is Bates’ favorite song on the album inspired by Angelo Badalamenti (composer of the strangely beautiful Twin Peaks soundtrack). The owls are not what they seem on this track:

While certainly not the largest venue in Cleveland, the highly anticipated concert was well attended. The audience was a mature group of both young and old and was somewhat reserved throughout most of the close to two hour concert, perhaps mesmerized by the very extraordinary and sophisticated light show, (but according to Julz Finley, it proved to be challenging to get a good shot with all the strobes and fog).
